Before we get started, we’d like to say it’s an honor to be interviewing American author, media personality, and podcast host, M. Curtis McCoy. We think this will be a great conversation!
Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
M. Curtis: Great question! Many of the interviews in my most recent book came from podcast episodes as I interviewed leaders I admire. Some chapters start as blog posts, and others come from live video interviews.
I believe in making the most of every minute because life could end at any moment. Duplicating my time is a crucial part of my current strategy. Each video interview gets syndicated to my M. Curtis McCoy Facebook author page, Twitter (via Periscope), DailyMotion, YouTube, other video streaming platforms, and my Success, Motivation & Inspiration group. That means I can get a full day’s results from a single hour of work!
Q. What is the most challenging part of the writing process in general?
M. Curtis: Marketing and promotion were rough in the beginning. Building a loyal following has allowed me to sell hundreds of books in a single day by merely notifying my existing audience!
Creating a strong and consistent personal brand is my most crucial recommendation if you’re a new or aspiring author. Building your brand is difficult, but if you can create a loyal following, it’s worth it.
Q. Recent books by M. Curtis McCoy are garnering great reviews. Tell us about your book “How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader” and the idea behind it.
M. Curtis: Thanks for noticing! By the time I was 27 years old, I was the owner of several companies in various industries, including fashion, medical, manufacturing, distribution, and pharmaceuticals. I had become successful at a young age. Life was great!
Everything changed when I started having daily grand mal seizures. In 2010, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Oncologists gave me only 60-90 days to live. I lost absolutely everything as I became unable to drive, live alone, or remember small details such as if I’d eaten or taken an insulin shot. Everything I had researched, the businesses I had built, and even my memory were gone.
My family took me to Tijuana, Mexico, to pursue alternative treatments. Uncertain whether I’d survive or not, I was inspired to make a difference in as many lives as possible.
I began contacting leaders I admired and asking questions. How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader is a compilation of true stories & conversations with entrepreneurs to help you in your journey to success.
Q. Please tell us more about “Success, Motivation & Inspiration.”
M. Curtis: Success, Motivation & Inspiration is the name of my podcast. The official Facebook group now has over 300,000 active members, and we’re gaining as many as 2,000 new members daily!
I think the reason for the group’s massive success is that it allows hundreds of thousands of leaders to connect with a similar group of people focused on personal development & self-improvement.
I’m blessed to be part of such an incredible group of leaders & entrepreneurs!
Q. What is the real secret to success, according to M. Curtis McCoy?
M. Curtis: Initially, my goal was to make 6-figures weekly. I worked 80 hours per week for years, building several companies that did well financially. I sponsored sporting events, bodybuilding shows, MMA fights, and parties at private clubs. On paper, I looked successful, and I had hundreds of contacts who would show up if I invited them to a free event.
When I was diagnosed with brain cancer, I sent out a mass text message to the same group of friends. Only three people besides my family showed up to visit me in the hospital. That wasn’t because they were terrible people. I hadn’t invested time in creating relationships or enjoying life. Work was my only focus.
That’s a long answer, but today my definition of success is doing something that makes the world a better place and living my life as an example. I prioritize happiness, my connection with the Lord, and the impact I’ll leave when I’m gone.
I wouldn’t trade the experience, but now I’m going to make it a point to travel, skydive, drive cars that get my heart pounding, and enjoy life with people I love.
Q. What’s next? Which book are you working on now?
M. Curtis: The book I’m working on now is about personal branding. I haven’t decided on a title for my next book yet, but I’m learning a lot! I gave a speech in Delhi, India, earlier this week about the subject, and guests from many countries seemed to enjoy it. It’s always a good sign to see people taking notes!
Q. I’ve seen you teach about practicing delayed gratification. Is that still the case?
M. Curtis: Wow. That’s another excellent question! A considerable percentage of the population is in debt due to financing new vehicles at high-interest rates and spending without saving. If you’re putting new clothes, vacations, or fancy dinners on credit cards, I still recommend getting your spending under control. Stop financing junk you don’t need to impress people you don’t like.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy yourself or reward yourself when you’ve earned it. For years, I failed to see this, but small rewards keep us motivated & inspired. It’s all about balance!
These are a couple of topics I cover in How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader! The book is available on Amazon & major retailers if you haven’t got a chance to read it yet!
